Esta profesora de matem\u00e1ticas de secundaria es madre soltera de una hija adolescente autista que tambi\u00e9n sufre de epilepsia y alergias graves. La vida se complic\u00f3 a\u00fan m\u00e1s para Cristina cuando los m\u00e9dicos le informaron que ten\u00eda dos tipos diferentes de c\u00e1ncer de mama en julio de 2016. De golpe, la profesora de matem\u00e1ticas se enfrent\u00f3 a una mastectom\u00eda bilateral y una linfadenectom\u00eda (extirpaci\u00f3n de ganglios linf\u00e1ticos), seguidas de seis ciclos de quimioterapia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La muerte de una t\u00eda sirve como un escalofriante recordatorio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cristina ha intentado mantener una actitud positiva durante su tratamiento contra el c\u00e1ncer, pero la vida le sigue presentando dificultades y p\u00e9rdidas personales. El d\u00eda programado para la cirug\u00eda de Cristina coincidi\u00f3 con el funeral de una t\u00eda que hab\u00eda perdido la batalla contra el c\u00e1ncer de mama. Para Cristina, esto fue un recordatorio de lo mucho que estaba en juego en su propia lucha contra el c\u00e1ncer.<\/p>\n<p>Las p\u00e9rdidas segu\u00edan acumul\u00e1ndose. Durante el tratamiento de Cristina, su abuela falleci\u00f3. La mujer era como una segunda madre para Cristina, y uno de sus \u00faltimos deseos fue que Cristina le pusiera su vestido para el velatorio. Con la ayuda de sus primos, Cristina intent\u00f3 cumplir el \u00faltimo deseo de su abuela, aunque vestirla no fue f\u00e1cil porque ten\u00eda los brazos muy r\u00edgidos, hinchados y doloridos tras la extirpaci\u00f3n de m\u00e1s de una docena de ganglios linf\u00e1ticos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reacciones adversas a la quimioterapia y m\u00e1s problemas de salud familiar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Las dificultades de Cristina a\u00fan no hab\u00edan terminado. Sufri\u00f3 m\u00faltiples reacciones al\u00e9rgicas graves y terribles efectos secundarios de la quimioterapia. Nos cuenta sobre largos episodios de v\u00f3mitos, erupciones cut\u00e1neas terribles y ardor en el cuero cabelludo que la llevaron a rogarle a una amiga que le afeitara el pelo. El resto de la familia de Cristina no se qued\u00f3 a salvo. Su hija sufri\u00f3 otra convulsi\u00f3n y su padre tambi\u00e9n sufri\u00f3 un problema de salud.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Las facturas se acumulan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Durante todo este tiempo, Cristina ha luchado por mantenerse al d\u00eda con sus facturas, lo cual ha sido casi imposible. Incluso antes del c\u00e1ncer, ya ten\u00eda dificultades para pagar las numerosas facturas m\u00e9dicas de su hija.<\/p>\n<p>Cristina nos cuenta que, aunque est\u00e1 incapacitada, le descuentan el sueldo por cada d\u00eda que la escuela debe pagar a un sustituto para que se haga cargo de su clase. La deducci\u00f3n es mayor que la que recibe por incapacidad, lo que genera una p\u00e9rdida neta por cada d\u00eda que est\u00e1 sin trabajo. Adem\u00e1s, en 2017, su seguro m\u00e9dico se reinici\u00f3, oblig\u00e1ndola a pagar de nuevo hasta su deducible m\u00e1ximo. Lo que m\u00e1s le preocupa a Cristina es pagar su hipoteca. El historial de su exmarido con el pago de la manutenci\u00f3n infantil es irregular, y Cristina ha aprendido a no depender de que ese cheque llegue cada mes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cristina consigue una victoria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>En la Fundaci\u00f3n Shades of Pink de California, consideramos que Cristina merec\u00eda una victoria despu\u00e9s de los muchos desaf\u00edos que ha enfrentado.
