Un malentendido que nos aleja de la indigencia financiera <\/strong><\/p>\n

Un diagn\u00f3stico de c\u00e1ncer de mama tiene consecuencias que la mayor\u00eda de nosotros no podemos imaginar a menos que nosotros o alguien cercano hayamos luchado por esa batalla. Como descubri\u00f3 Teresa despu\u00e9s de que le diagnosticaran c\u00e1ncer de mama en etapa II a los 42 a\u00f1os, el tratamiento es solo el comienzo.<\/p>\n

El c\u00e1ncer de mama arroja a sus v\u00edctimas a un nuevo mundo lleno de citas m\u00e9dicas, investigaci\u00f3n de protocolos de tratamiento y gesti\u00f3n de formularios de seguros m\u00e9dicos complejos para garantizar la cobertura y los reembolsos. Un error, una peque\u00f1a falta de comunicaci\u00f3n puede tener efectos devastadores.<\/p>\n

Despu\u00e9s de que le diagnosticaran la enfermedad, Teresa se someti\u00f3 a una mastectom\u00eda y a varios ciclos de quimioterapia. Lo \u00fanico que se interpon\u00eda entre esta madre de cuatro hijos y una monta\u00f1a de facturas m\u00e9dicas era el seguro m\u00e9dico que le proporcionaba su empleador.<\/p>\n

A Teresa le hicieron creer que su seguro m\u00e9dico continuar\u00eda cubri\u00e9ndola hasta diciembre de 2017. Luego, en una cita de quimioterapia en noviembre, descubri\u00f3 que su seguro hab\u00eda sido cancelado en octubre.<\/p>\n

Las facturas se acumulan<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hasta que le cancelaron el seguro, Teresa pagaba $128 dos veces al mes para seguir en el seguro de su empleador. Con la p\u00e9rdida de esa cobertura, solo le quedaba una opci\u00f3n: inscribirse en COBRA, que ofrec\u00eda la misma cobertura por $905 al mes. Teresa, que viv\u00eda sola y no pod\u00eda trabajar, luchaba por conseguir el dinero. Sin la red de seguridad de su seguro, Teresa se preguntaba c\u00f3mo iba a pagar la quimioterapia y la radioterapia que necesitaba para vencer al c\u00e1ncer.<\/p>\n

La historia de Teresa es muy com\u00fan. Las compa\u00f1\u00edas de seguros no quieren cubrir a las mujeres con c\u00e1ncer de mama porque sus tratamientos son caros. Muchos departamentos de recursos humanos, aunque tengan buenas intenciones, no siempre saben c\u00f3mo comunicarse con una empleada enferma. Un malentendido podr\u00eda llevar a que se cancelara el seguro, como fue el caso de Teresa.<\/p>\n

Alivio en forma de subvenci\u00f3n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Afortunadamente, Teresa pudo continuar con su tratamiento al reunir los requisitos para acceder a Medi-Cal y al inscribirse en el Programa de Tratamiento del C\u00e1ncer de Mama y Cuello Uterino de California. Para ayudarla con las facturas inesperadas que acumul\u00f3 en octubre, Shades of Pink Foundation California le otorg\u00f3 una subvenci\u00f3n que utiliz\u00f3 para cubrir su alquiler en diciembre y enero.<\/p>\n
