A principios de sus 20 a\u00f1os, Noni sufri\u00f3 dolores de espalda cr\u00f3nicos y fibromialgia tan graves que se vio obligada a solicitar una incapacidad permanente. La p\u00e9rdida de su salud y su autonom\u00eda le provoc\u00f3 graves episodios de depresi\u00f3n. A lo largo de todos estos importantes desaf\u00edos, Noni logr\u00f3 encontrar peque\u00f1os rayos de felicidad. Aprendi\u00f3 a estirar sus peque\u00f1os pagos mensuales por incapacidad para poder permitirse un apartamento sencillo y encontr\u00f3 el amor incondicional de su perro.<br \/>\nEra una vida, y Noni la estaba haciendo funcionar... hasta que el c\u00e1ncer llam\u00f3 a su puerta.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dos golpes devastadores<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A finales de diciembre de 2015, Noni descubri\u00f3 que ten\u00eda c\u00e1ncer de mama en etapa III. Su equipo m\u00e9dico actu\u00f3 con rapidez. Se someti\u00f3 a una mastectom\u00eda bilateral y reconstrucci\u00f3n y ahora est\u00e1 programada para recibir radioterapia. Sus m\u00e9dicos quieren que tambi\u00e9n considere la quimioterapia, pero el fr\u00e1gil estado emocional de Noni la ha dejado con la incertidumbre de si podr\u00e1 soportar los agotadores tratamientos de quimioterapia. Esto se debe a que, aunque Noni agreg\u00f3 el c\u00e1ncer a su lista de problemas de salud, su vida financiera cuidadosamente equilibrada tambi\u00e9n se estaba desmoronando bajo sus pies. En enero de este a\u00f1o, recibi\u00f3 un aviso de que sus beneficios por discapacidad se reducir\u00edan en 31%. La diferencia era solo de unos pocos cientos de d\u00f3lares, pero para alguien como Noni, que siempre viv\u00eda al borde de la estabilidad financiera, esta reducci\u00f3n fue m\u00e1s que suficiente para sumir su mundo en el caos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Perdiendo su independencia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Noni nunca tuvo mucho, pero estaba orgullosa de ese peque\u00f1o apartamento. Cuando sus beneficios se redujeron dr\u00e1sticamente y los gastos m\u00e9dicos se acumularon, se vio obligada a mudarse a casa de una amiga. Sin familia ni ahorros, tuvo que aceptar donaciones de alimentos y ayuda para el transporte de su peque\u00f1a red de amigos.<br \/>\nNoni nos cuenta: \u201cLa suma del c\u00e1ncer me ha hecho perder mi independencia y me cuesta llegar a fin de mes\u201d. Sus mayores desaf\u00edos son encontrar dinero para pagar los pagos del auto y la gasolina para poder seguir yendo a sus tratamientos.<\/p>\n<p>En SOPFCA nos alegramos de poder darle a Noni buenas noticias en un a\u00f1o tan complicado para ella. Con el apoyo de nuestros amigos de SITE, pudimos brindarle una subvenci\u00f3n ampliada que la ayud\u00f3 a pagar el seguro del autom\u00f3vil, ponerse al d\u00eda con el pago de la gasolina y comprar alimentos.
