Gift Card Program
The Story Behind SOPFCA’s New Gift Card Referral Program
In 2021, SOPFCA initiated the Gift Card Program in response to our healthcare partners at local cancer treatment centers informing us that many of their patients did not meet strict eligibility requirements for our original grants. Some of these women were receiving non-traditional treatments, while others worked in unconventional jobs (eg, as caregivers), were stay-at-home mothers, or retired. However, they still had immediate financial needs. Since that time, the Gift Card Program has been our primary focus and method of providing financial support.
The Gift Card Program provides financial support in a manner that is quick and easy. The application process is simple: women need only to provide a few personal details, tell us what type of gift card(s) they want, and include a verification from one of our referral partners that they are in active breast cancer treatment.
We offer gift cards to some of the area’s most popular gas, grocery store, and big box retailer chains, including:
- Chevron
- Arco
- Ralphs
- Vons
- Albertsons
- Target
- Walmart
The gift card program has been highly successful; from 2021 to 2024 SOPFCA provided 455 grants totaling $186,125, with an average grant of $400. Many applicants reported monthly incomes of less than $2000, far below what is necessary to live in one of the most expensive cities in the US.
Women may receive one “award†each year; however, they may reapply if they are still in treatment one year later. While we aspire to increase the amount of our grants, we are committed to our mission of serving as many women and families as possible. Our ongoing success relies on the support of personal donors and partners in the business and community sectors.
