Courage at 83: Joanna’s Journey Through Cancer Alone

Joanna, 83, has faced more in the last few months than many do in a lifetime. A widow living on a fixed income from Social Security, she began her breast cancer journey in February 2025. What started with a lumpectomy soon became more complicated when doctors discovered not all of the cancer had been removed. A second surgery followed, and her care team is now deciding whether chemotherapy is needed before radiation begins. Hormone therapy may also be added to her treatment plan.

Life without a Partner, but Not Without Struggle

Navigating treatment alone is daunting at any age — but especially in your 80s. Joanna has endured complications from surgery and an overwhelming number of medical appointments. Recently, she was also involved in a car accident, leaving her without reliable transportation just when she needs it most. Travel to appointments now requires extra help or significant expense, and she’s had to rely on costly gas or delivery services for basic needs.

A Lifeline for Groceries and Health

Despite everything, Joanna continues to advocate for herself. She recently learned how to order groceries online from Vons — a lifeline during this challenging time. Thanks to our donors, SOPFCA was able to provide Joanna with grocery gift cards to help ease the burden. These cards allow her to access healthy food and preserve her limited funds for other critical needs, including transportation and future treatments.

We’re honored to support Joanna as she faces cancer with resilience, dignity, and strength.
